After years of public speculation, Clay Aiken is stepping up to the plate and out of “the closet” and being honest about his sexuality. Clay Aiken Is GayIn a country plagued by gross social stigmas surrounding sex and sexuality, “coming out of the closet” can be one of the most difficult things to do. This act of bravery gets exponentially more difficult when the “closet dweller” is living their life in the public eye. The 2004 American Idol runner up, Clay Aiken, has had a fair share of rumors spread about his sexuality. From Kelly Ripa’s perceived homophobic comments to speculation about the conception of his newborn child, the subject of Aiken’s homosexuality has somewhat over shadowed his career in music. But Aiken is drawing his line in the sand with the announcement that he is, in fact, a gay man. “I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things,” the cover of the new People magazine quotes Aiken as saying. Rumors About Clay Aiken’s SexualityAiken’s revelation may not come as a surprise to some people, as he has been hinting at the truth behind his sexuality for some time now. “One thing I’ve found of people in the public eye, either you’re a womanizer or you’ve got to be gay,” he said in a cover feature in Rolling Stone in July of 2003. “Since I’m neither of those, people are completely concerned about me.” Although Aiken denied being gay, many interpreted his comments as a veiled attempt to “come out of the closet.” Then the rumors really began to make their rounds. Earlier this year, a former U.S. soldier turned gay porn star told The National Enquirer that he had a “one night stand” with Aiken. The alleged tryst, coupled with the recent revelation that his son was conceived through artificial insemination set the gossip rags on fire. Gay Entertainers: From Ellen DeGeneres to Lance Bass Despite the negative social stigma, many entertains have recently done away with the masquerade and announced their sexual preference to the world. Comedian Ellen DeGeneres came out on the cover of Time in 1997, while former ‘Nsyncer Lance Bass and Neil Patrick Harris revealed their sexual preferences on People magazine covers in 2006. With all of the pressure celebrities face to adhere to socially acceptable standards of living, it is truly the work of a brave soul admit to living an “alternative lifestyle.” But the question now becomes: What difference does it make if an entertainer is gay? Does that some how affect their ability to be entertaining?
