Chas & Dave and Brooks & Dunn Decide to Call it Quits

Nov 15, 2009 Adrian Peel

After years of success, 2009 has seen these two very different musical pairings call time on their respective careers.

Leon "Kix" Brooks and Ronnie Dunn came together in Nashville in 1990, after having previously worked as solo artists and songwriters. They have since become, according to their official website, the most successful duo in country music history, selling over 30 million records, winning more than 80 music industry awards and notching up 23 number one hits.

Their most most famous songs include: My Next Broken Heart, Boot-Scootin' Boogie, Rock My World (Little Country Girl), You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone (their only number one to feature Kix Brooks on lead vocals), My Maria and Ain't Nothing 'Bout You.

The End of Brooks & Dunn

They announced their decision to split on their website on August 10th 2009 with the following statement:

"After 20 years of making music and riding this trail together, we have agreed as a duo that it's time to call it a day. This ride has been everything and more than we could ever have dreamed. We owe it all to you, the fans. If you hear rumors, don't believe them, it's just time. We will release our #1s and Then Some on September 8th and come see you all one more time in 2010, with The Last Rodeo Tour."

One of England's Best-Loved Musical Groups

A world away from Nashville in the pubs and clubs of North London, Chas Hodges (piano/vocals) and Dave Peacock (bass/vocals) began working together in the 1970s, following active lives as session musicians in the London music scene of the 1960s.

Their debut album, One Fing ‘n’ Anuvver was released in 1975 and a string of classic sing-along hits, including Gertcha, Rabbit, London Girls, Wallop, Margate and their UK number two, Ain't No Pleasing You, followed. Their unique musical style combined their strong "cockney" accents and humour with American rock 'n' roll and saw them continue as a highly popular concert draw well into the new millennium.

Chas & Dave are No More

In September 2009, it was announced that Chas & Dave were to stop working together. Dave Peacock had decided to retire from the music business following the death, from lung cancer, of his beloved wife, Sue, on July 4th, leaving Chas to fulfill their concert obligations as "Chas & His Band."

The BBC website quoted the duo, on September 22nd 2009, as saying:

"Sue was instrumental behind the scenes for Chas and Dave, working tirelessly on the side of the business that musicians just aren't good at. It's accurate to say that without Sue and [Chas's wife] Joan, there wouldn't have been Chas and Dave."

The Music and the Memories Live On

Although Brooks & Dunn and Chas & Dave will now cease to exist, the pleasure they have brought to countless fans around the world will not easily be forgotten. The songs will still be played and those lucky enough to have seen either pair in concert, will cherish the memories forever.

Let's hope they both continue the current musical trend and reunite soon.
