Kelly Rowland makes every effort to avoid the dreaded "sophomore slump" with a hot new look, fun sound, and mature lyrics.

On The Horizon: New Kelly Rowland

Now that everyone has finally gotten Nelly & Kelly’s “Dilemma” out of their heads, it’s time for Kelly Rowland to put out her first solo album since 2002.

Due out July 3 is “Ms. Kelly” with the lead-off single “Like This” featuring Eve. It’s not the only guest appearance on the album though -- Snoop Dogg also lends some rhymes. This is Rowland’s sophomore release and contains production by some of the best: Scott Storch and Rockwilder. There is also production from Polow Da Don (“London Bridge”), Sean Garrett (“Ring The Alarm”), SoulShock & Karlin, and Billy Man.

Rowland’s last album, “Simply Deep,” saw little radio airplay aside from the omnipresent “Dilemma” and softer “Stole,” the former of which wasn’t just a hot seller and chart topper, it also took home a Grammy award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2003.

The “living in Beyonce’s shadow” comparisons have been many. But those comparisons are pretty unfair considering the current climate is not one that is very kind to R&B. The same thing was true in 2002. One can turn on the radio now to hear not much in the way of R&B and much more in the way of Hip-Hop and rap, so look for Rowland’s sophomore effort to veer a tad more in that direction. If the list of producers and guests on the album is any indication, expect some serious beats. Also expect a little less R&B and a lot more attitude.

It can be heard on “Like This” featuring Eve when she sings, “I don’t care about love/ I just wanna get it up.” The message is clear: Rowland has shed her nice girl image for that of a mature diva. She’s street-smart now. It also looks like she’s having a lot of fun in the video with Eve.

Despite the more Hip-Hop feel to “Like This,” the song still manages to showcase Rowland’s voice. "Writing and recording 'Ms. Kelly' has definitely been a learning process," Rowland says. "And I like that it was. I needed to prove something to myself: that I can make great music, stay true to who I am and, more importantly, be my own woman, in and out of the studio. Making 'Ms. Kelly' made me grow up in every aspect of my life."

The song and video do show some maturity for Rowland as an artist. She says it was definitely what she was aiming for. “I said, 'Kelly. You're 25 years old! You like to party and you want your songs to be played in clubs.' I wanted to my new record to sound as young as I feel, so that's what I focused on."
