Michael Joseph Jackson (29 August 1958 - 25 June 2009) was the seventh of nine children. He began his career in the entertainment world as early as 1966 as a member of The Jackson 5 with his brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon. They were the first act ever to have their first four singles reach the top of the American charts. In 1971 Michael began a solo career while still a member of The Jackson 5, and he was a dominant figure in the music world through the 1980s and beyond. Over the years he was famous for not only reinventing his musical style but also his personal appearance. When he died he had been rehearsing for his comeback concerts, with 50 concerts from July 13 2009 to March 2010 in London all sell-outs. Thriller included mega-hits "Beat It", "Billie-Jean" and "Thriller", and remains the biggest-selling album of all time, with more than 26 million copies. Michael also wrote "We Are The World" with Lionel Ritchie as a charity single for famine relief in Africa. He also co-wrote two hit singles "The Girl Is Mine" and "Say Say Say" with Paul McCartney. One of his most famous performances was his halftime show at the Super Bowl XXVII which was viewed by millions worldwide, including 135 million Americans. After being catapulted onto the stage he stood motionless for several minutes with a raised clenched fist, before throwing away his sunglasses and performing to a wildly cheering crowd. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m. and he had no pulse and appeared to have suffered a cardiac arrest. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center where his family rushed to join him. Confirmation of his death occurred some time later. Micheal was nicknamed Wacko Jacko for some of his eccentricities, and was dogged by many controversies during his life. Living his life in the public eye he was robbed of his own childhood to some extent, and is survived by his own three children. Despite his personal problems he will always be remembered for his musical legacy and some of the best MTV clips ever. Even in the hours following his death, sales of Michael Jackson CDs, DVDs, and other memorabilia have skyrocketed as fans worldwide want to relive the fantastic musical memories he has left behind. He will be sadly missed by millions worldwide.
