New Kids On The Block Reunion TourThe 90s Boy Band Returns to the Stage with New Material
Fifteen years ago, the NKOTB walked away from the fame and fortune of being the biggest singing group in the world. Can they turn back the clock with a reunion tour?
The New Kids On The Block (NKOTB) reunited this year to produce a new album and delight their former fans on a multi-city tour across Canada, the United States and Europe. The History of the New Kids on the BlockThe New Kids On The Block were assembled by producer Maurice Starr in Boston in 1984. The young men that made up the group, Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre and brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight have collectively sold over 70 million albums worldwide, played sold out tours all over the world and won two American Music Awards. Many consider them the original boy band that created the mould for how future groups of the genre, including *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, would look and sound. The NKOTB officially disbanded in 1994. Since then there have been a few unsuccessful attempts at a reunion, but none came to fruition until they recorded a new album (2008’s The Block) and embarked on a major tour beginning in Toronto in September. The Block : Summertime The catchy hit “Summertime” was the first single from The Block. The song and accompanying video featuring the New Kids frolicking and canoodling with hot, young girls on the beach gave the group’s old fans the chance to see and hear their childhood crushes all grown up. The album is chock full of the kind of sexual innuendo they couldn’t get away with writing or singing when their fan base was made up largely of pre-pubescent girls. The guys don’t miss a single opportunity to remind their listeners that they are now grown men (the song “Grown Man” featuring the Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger is a highlight of the album). Speaking of featured artists, The Block boasts many guest appearances from the music world’s hottest singers and rappers including Ne-Yo, Akon, Lady GaGa and New Edition. The Block debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums Chart and was certified Gold in Canada in October of 2008. The New Kids on the Block Reunion ShowFans expecting to see a sad group of aging men unsuccessfully attempting to revisit their glory days will be happily surprised to witness instead a youthful, energetic unit of explosive pop virtuosity. The NKOTB have certainly learned over the years how to put on a killer show and they do not disappoint their hardcore fans with this long-awaited tour. From the lovely and talented opening act of Natasha Bedingfield to the very last encore, the screams of the almost entirely female audience are deafening. The New Kids perform a deft combination of their old hits and their new tracks. Fans will go crazy for classics like “Step by Step”, “Hangin’ Tough” and “The Right Stuff”, while the new material slips seamlessly into the show. Ultimately, the concert manages to be both nostalgic and current. All the teenybopper excitement merges with a more grown up, sexually charged vibe to create the most fun a fan can possibly have at a live show.
