Pharoahe Monch: He Will Storm Top 40 Next.
Those stopping by the MySpace music main page over the last week have no doubt seen the invite to listen to Pharoahe Monch’s new album, “Desire.” “Desire” is definitely the song on the album of the same name that is not to be missed.
“Welcome To The Terror Dome” is a song off of the album “Desire” that delivers the same sentiment of an older Monch song, “Agent Orange.” It may not be as angry as it was on “Agent Orange,” but it’s nice to hear Monch keeping that fight on in his lyrics. He even takes a stab at the Catholic Church in addition to the Bush Administration and the “War on Terror.” He’s got a way of calling people out a fan can really appreciate.
That’s just one of the things to differentiate him from the pack. His voice is crisp and –sorry, T-Pain- will never need a vocoder to stand out. His voice alone sounds like no other rapper out there. Monch is someone not easily confused with any other MC. No one else quite has his flow either. He has the kind of rhymes so admirable it’s easy to wonder, “how did he come up with that?”
Give the entire “Desire” album a listen because it’s worth it. Listen to "Body Baby" on his MySpace in the least. The song swings with its beat and that little piano bit just gives it that extra excitement. It’s reminiscent of an Outkast track musically.
Shop Boyz “Party Like a Rock Star,” is on track to be the next #1 song in America. It is currently #2 on the Billboard Top 100. But if Shop Boyz can make the Top 10, there is definitely room for Pharoahe Monch in the tiny little club of hits as well. There’s no reason why the Monch sound can’t make it to the top.
So the question is this: will Pharoahe Monch’s “Desire” album be the one to take him mainstream? Not that he needs to be and not that this is what it’s all about. But his music is good. Real good. And who doesn’t want to see the day when the cream rises to the top instead of a song like, say, Enrique Iglesias, who is currently at #27 with “Do You Know.”
How did that get there?
And why is Timbaland’s “The Way I Are” only at #18? Oh yeah, it’s only been on the chart for 3 weeks. It actually just jumped from #40 to #18 in a week.
Huey’s “Pop Lock and Drop It” is a song that can only give a music fan heartburn. A Monch song can beat a Huey song with a stick any day. Huey’s “Pop Lock And Drop It” sounds like every other hip-hop song out there right now. There’s a lot of thug to it, the lyrics objectify women, and one probably needs to be wearing a grill to listen to it. Monch, with his music, is something anyone can listen to and appreciate -- grill or no grill.
