Songs about love are often so generically appealing that finding originality in this genre seems almost impossible.

Looking for artistic individuality in a love song can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. In an effort to relate to a mass audience, many songwriters keep the lyrics particularly general.

This doesn't make it easy to find the perfect song to convey one's emotions to their love interest. Here is a compilation of unique songs to express one's specific personal feelings to the one they love.

Love, Love, Love

There are many alternative songs about many kinds of love. Michael Franti's Love Invincible inspires and encourages one to show love's possibilities, while Love Shack by the B52's is a fun upbeat song about heading out to a place to be together. For a song written from the heart that professes "I will always love you" The Cure's Love Song is a solid choice.

  • Love Shack - The B52's
  • Semiotic Love - Blaqk Audio
  • This Modern Love - Bloc Party
  • Love Song - The Cure
  • Modern Love - David Bowie
  • Higher Love - Depeche Mode
  • Love & Some Verses - Iron & Wine
  • Punk Love - The Magnetic Fields
  • Love Invincible - Michael Franti
  • Love Vigilantes - New Order
  • La La Love You - Pixies
  • Love - Smashing Pumpkins
  • Another Love Song - Queens of the Stone Age

These alternative songs about love offer a unique twist on expressing affection. The Pixies La La Love You may be the oddest one in the bunch, but it could easily become a favorite.

Be My Baby

Finding the right song to ask the "Be Mine" question to ...The song Electric Feel by MGMT doesn't directly come out and ask the proposal, instead it let's the person know that they have electrifying feelings for them. The beat of this song will have you grooving even if the answer is no.

  • Will You Be My Girlfriend - The Atoms
  • First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes
  • Be My Girlfriend - Carbona
  • Be My Baby - The Dollyrots
  • Do You Realize - The Flaming Lips
  • Are You Gonna Be My Girl - JET
  • Girlfriend - Matthew Sweet
  • I Only Want to Be With You - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
  • Electric Feel - MGMT
  • Do You Wanna Be My Girlfriend - The Motorettes
  • Who Wants to Be My Boyfriend - Nikki Corvette and the Stingrays
  • Be Mine - Nuclear Saturday
  • I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend - The Ramones
  • Boyfriend - Winston and the Telescreen

These song choices allow the profession of love to be stated in several different styles. JET's Are You Gonna Be My Girl is recommended as a cool way of making one's intentions known, the song comes right out and asks the question quite clearly and doesn't say much else. For a more powerful song full of emotion, Do You Realize by The Flaming Lips is an appropriate option.

Holding On To Love

No one said holding on to love is easy. For those relationships teetering on the edge of being over, try these songs to tip them back toward staying. In Coldplay's song The Scientist the lyrics state that it's a shame to part and to go back to the start.

  • Look to Me - Azure Ray
  • Hold on to Me - The British Woos
  • The Scientist - Coldplay
  • Come on Home - Franz Ferdinand
  • I Don't Want to Get Over You - The Magnetic Fields
  • Your Love - Midtown
  • Girlfriend in a Coma - The Smiths
  • You're All I Have - Snow Patrol
  • What I Got - Sublime
  • Please Be Patient With Me - Wilco

Give some of these alternative love songs a listen, a few of them are unusual, some of them are fun, and all of them are genuinely unique.
