As the story goes, Harrison and Lynne were about to work on a Harrison album and took some space to rehearse in Dylan’s garage. That garage was owned by Petty, which is how he entered the scene. They all started to jam together with Roy Orbison and soon they had a #3 debut album in 1988 with “Handle With Care” as the single. That first debut album was called “Traveling Wilburys Volume One,” and for kicks they named their second album “Vol .3.” Unfortunately, Orbison died of a sudden heart attack after “Volume One” was released. That’s the Rolling Stone version of the story; a much more specific story is on the band’s MySpace page. http://www.myspace.com/travelingwilburys The MySpace version is much more exciting. It starts with Harrison wanting to do a B-side song with Lynne, who was already working with Orbison. Orbison agreed to help on the Harrison B-side but then they had to get Harrisons’s guitar from Petty’s house. Dylan stepped in and the jam session began, and the rest, of course, is history. They didn’t create the band on purpose, and this remains one of the chief factors endearing the band to rock critics and fans even to this day. The Traveling Wilburys Collection on Rhino will hold treasures for fans such as new and previously unreleased music. The DVD shows unseen Wilburys footage.
