If someone calls you “Krispy,” that is a good thing. Especially if it comes from Memphis rapper Kia Shine, who says being “krispy” is being fly and fresh.
Yes, Kia Shine’s song/newly coined term has a lot to do with fashion and looking right.
He came from the Memphis underground and is now on Universal Motown Records. He resisted the crack hustle growing up because he knew God had other bigger plans for him.
The first plan unfolded in a corporate job. Kia worked for casino conglomerate Harris Entertainment and did well. So well, in fact that he got promoted to a job in Las Vegas. But Kia turned it down and answered music’s call instead.
He started by selling beats and was soon successful in selling to heavy hitters like Juvenile and Ludacris. He signed the best local producers in Memphis and his company did well but ultimately failed.
That is when Kia transitioned from producer to rapper.
"Due Season" Drops Tuesday, July 31
Fast forward to now and Kia Shine’s first album, “Due Season” is due to be released this Tuesday, 7/31. He’s already an award-winning rapper, having won the 2007 Southern Entertainment Award for the Independent Artist of the Year.
As I write this, Kia Shine is performing in Dallas. Monday (7/30) he’ll be on Rap City at 5:00 p.m. EST and for Tuesday, he treats Memphis fans to an in-store at Spin Street from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
